Since its 1991 founding by two ex-Bain consultants, Bill Achtmeyer and John Rutherford, The Parthenon Group has grown rapidly — about 30 percent a year. The company intentionally has remained on the small side, with 150 consultants in three offices (in Boston, London and San Francisco). Despite fierce competition from much larger strategy firms, mighty mite Parthenon has amassed an impressive client list that includes Microcom, Pepsi, Ocean Spray, Starwood, Thomson, Madison Square Garden and American Express, though, like many other small firms, Parthenon also advises smaller entrepreneurial enterprises.
Parthenon is one of the few consulting firms willing to put its money where its mouth is. Through an innovative equity incentive program, the firm encourages its executives to buy shares of its client companies, putting consultants in the same position as their clients’ senior management and fostering commitment and an entrepreneurial environment. It has also netted consultants between 50 and 100 percent more than they would have earned with a traditional compensation package.
